Set Firefox 3 to Use Gmail for mailto: Links

The Premise

Pretty damn simple, really. if you go to Tools -> Options -> Applications, you'll find that Firefox 3 only has options to set Yahoo! mail for your mailto: links. If you use Gmail for your email, like anyone who isn't an idiot, though, this is a problem. So, open up your Gmail, and paste the TOP line of the below code normally, or the BOTTOM line of code if you use Google Apps (i.e. your email address doesn't end in @gmail.com or @googlemail.com

The Code

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

javascript:window.navigator.registerProtocolHandler("mailto","https://mail.google.com/a/REPLACETHISWITHYOURDOMAINNAME.com/mail/?extsrc=mailto&url=%s","GMail")

Clearly, replace your domain name where relevant, if you're a google apps user.

If this doesn't work...

You SHOULD see a little bar pop up at the top of your screen asking you to confirm. If you don't see that, do these steps:

  1. Type about:config in your address bar, then click on the "I’ll be careful, I promise!" button.
  2. Type gecko.handlerservice into the filter field and find "allowRegisterFromDifferentHost". Double click that entry to change it from false to true.

Then paste the code into the URL bar, and hit enter. It should definately work this time.
